A kampong house in Kampung Lorong Buangkok.
Singapore, a bustling city with skyscrapers and a shoppers' paradise. Sadly, development comes with a high price to pay when heritage has to make way for more land....
Tucked away somewhere in a corner of the cosmopolitan city, is a place where a slower pace of life seems to exist. Kampong Lorong Buangkok is the last surviving kampong (Malay for village) in the north east region on mainland Singapore. The kampong was also known as Selak Kain in Malay, which meant 'hitching up one's sarong (skirt)' as people hitch up their sarongs to wade through floods whenever the village experienced flash floods in the 20th century Singapore.
According to the news, the kampong is due to be demolished and redeveloped in the near future. Chickens pecking away on the narrow dirt roads and wooden huts with zinc roofs, many of them are empty as most families have since moved out.
The kampong is off Sengkang East Avenue near Yio Chu Kang Road. One could alight at the bus-stop along Yio Chu Kang Road, opposite the Church of St Vincent de Paul. Lorong Buangkok is within walking distance from Gerald Drive.
Capture a part of old Singapore before it fades away.....
